# Common Terms

### Ad Tool

Any advertisement tracked by [NATS](#nats). Includes [tours.](#tour)

### Account Representative

A special [affiliate](#affiliate) account, created by the [Program Owner](#program-owner), who can manage other affiliates.

### Admin (Person, NATS)

A [program owner](#program-owner) or someone working on their behalf.

### Admin (Webpage)

The administration interface in [NATS](#nats).

### Affiliate

A person who makes referrals to one or more [sites](#site).

### Asset Overview

Any single page that allows you to view/manage all aspects of 1 asset. For example, the [Biller Overview](/nats-admin/billers/biller-overview.md).

### Biller

The company that bills a [member](#member) on behalf of the [program manager](#program-owner). Also known as an [Internet Payment Service Provider (IPSP)](#internet-payment-service-processor-ipsp).

### Breakdown (Reporting)

The way the data displayed in a report table is grouped. For example by Day, Month, or Site.

### Campaign

A [NATS](#nats) feature that lets [affiliates](#affiliate) track their promotions.

### Cancel

An expiration that is effective immediately. See also: [Expire](#expire).

### CARMA

The [Content Administration and Release Management Application](http://www.toomuchmedia.com/products/carma/).

### Cascade

A [NATS](#nats) feature that sends [surfers](#surfer) through multiple [billers](#biller) in order to increase sign-up probability.

### Chargeback

A notice from the [biller](#biller) that a [member](#member) rescinded a credit card transaction.

### Commission

Special payout rules in a [program](#program).

### Confirmation Page

The page used by the owner of an [offer](#offer) to denote an [offer](#offer) (or [sale](#undefined)) has been completed.

### Continuity

Any [sale](#undefined) after the [customer's](#customer) first [sale](#undefined) within a set [period](#period).

### Conversion

A [rebill](#rebill) that turns a [trial member](#trial-sign-up) into a regular [member](#member).

### Credit

A refund issued to a [member](#member). Most credits are [chargebacks](#chargeback).

### Cross Sell

When a [surfer](#surfer) becomes a [member](#member) of more than one [site](#site) at once through a link on the [join form](#join-form). Compare with [Upsell](#upsell).

### Customer

Any [visitor](#visitor) that has signed up as a [member](#member).

### Datalink (dataplus, etc.)

A report from the [biller](#biller) to [NATS](#nats) about [rebills](#rebill), [chargebacks](#chargeback), and [credits](#credit).

### Domain

The [fully qualified domain name](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fully_qualified_domain_name) of your NATS server.

### Expire

Removing a member's access. Most members have expiration dates: a date when their access is removed. See also: [Cancel](#cancel).

### Gateway

A [join form](#join-form) hosted by [NATS](#nats) that sends transaction information to the [biller](#biller).

### GeoIP

The geographic location of an Internet protocol (IP) address. For example, the IP address, 66.230.151.34, is registered in Weehawken, NJ, USA.

### Host

The person who owns, and maybe administers, a [site's](#site) server.

### Initial Bill

The first transaction by a [member](#member). The initial bill turns a [surfer](#surfer) into a member or [trial member](#trial-sign-up).

### Internet Payment Service Processor (IPSP)

A [biller](#biller).

### Join Form

A form where [surfers](#surfer) enter their financial information. After completing the join form, a surfer becomes a [member](#member). (Compare with [pre-join form](#pre-join-form).)

### Join Option

A membership plan or purchasable item with a specific price. Join options are tied to [sites](#site) or [tours](#tour).

### Linkcode

A referral [URL](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Locator) tracked by [NATS](#nats).

### Linkdomain

A [site's](#site) [subdomain](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdomain) that points to the [program owner's](#program-owner) [NATS](#nats). For example: the site [www.example.com](http://www.example.com) could have the linkdomain signup.example.com.

### Member

Any user with access to a [site](#site).

### Membership

[Member's](#member) level of access to a [site](#site).&#x20;

### NATS

The [Next-Generation Affiliate Tracking Software](http://www.toomuchmedia.com/products/nats/).  &#x20;

### NATSCode

The special part of a URL that [NATS](#nats) uses to credit an [affiliate](#affiliate) and record statistics. The NATSCode is different for each [affiliate](#affiliate), [program](#program), [site](#site), and [ad tool](#adtool). In the following example URL, <http://example.com/track/MS4yLjEuNS4wLjAuMC4w>, the NATSCode is the string that follows track/, or "MS4yLjEuNS4wLjAuMC4w" in this case.

### Non-trial Sign-up

A [member](#member) who joined without first becoming a [trial-member](#trial-sign-up).

### Override

An [admin's](#admin-person-nats) ability to temporarily become an existing [affiliate](#affiliate).

### Overview

Almost all the primary content within the NATS admin includes a dedicated page that displays all the relevant details. For example, the Overview for 1 Site.

### Partner

An [affiliate](#affiliate) who shares in part of a [site's](#site) total profit.

### Payment Dump

A file containing a list of transactions to be executed by the [payment processor](#payment-processor) or imported into an accounting program like [Intuit Quickbooks](http://quickbooks.intuit.com/).

### Payment Processor

The company that sends payments to [affiliates](#affiliate) on the [program owner](#program-owner)'s behalf.

### Pay Via

The method the [payment processor](#payment-processor) uses to pay the [affiliate](#affiliate).

### Payout

The act of paying an [affiliate](#affiliate) through a [payment processor](#payment-processor) using the [program](#program) rules.

### Period

[Member](#member): The amount of time between [rebills](#rebill). A member may only use one trial period. A recurring period continues until stopped.

[Affiliate](#affiliate): The amount time between payment cycles. By default, NATS payment cycles are bi-monthly, beginning on the 1st and 16th of the month.

### Poll

A report from the [biller](#biller) to [NATS](#nats) about [rebills](#rebill), [chargebacks](#chargeback), and [credits](#credit).

### Popup

A web browser window opened by a [JavaScript](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaScript) function. [NATS](#nats) can show different popups to different [surfers](#surfer) using a [popup chain](#popup-chain).

### Popup Chain

The programing logic that determines when and which [popup](#popup) is displayed.

### Postback

A special [URL](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Locator) that [billers](#biller) use to send [member](#member) account information to [NATS](#nats).

### Pre-Join Form

A form displayed by [NATS](#nats) where [surfers](#surfer) enter their desired [membership](#undefined) information before being sent to the [biller](#biller). (Compare with [join form](#join-form).)

### Price Cascade

A series of usually decreasing [trial membership](#trial-sign-up) prices offered to the [surfer](#surfer) in exit [popups](#popup).

### Program

Defines how [affiliates](#affiliate) get paid. The [program owner](#program-owner) may offer several different programs.

### Program Owner

The [NATS](#nats) licensee responsible for creating [programs](#program).

### Raw Hit

Every single time a [surfer](#surfer) clicks on your [link codes](#linkcode).

### Rebill

Any transaction after the [initial transaction](#initial-bill).

### Refund

A [credit](#credit).

### Reseller

An [affiliate](#affiliate). (The term reseller is deprecated.)

### Sale

A transaction processed through a [biller](#biller) for tokens or access to a [site's](#site) [member's](#member) area

### Shortname

An internal reference name for objects tracked by [NATS](#nats). Shortnames must be unique and cannot contain spaces or special characters.

### Site

A website that a [surfer](#surfer) can view and join to become a [member](#member).

### Skin

The layout of the [site](#site). Different user types have different skins. (See also: [template](#template).)

### Surfer

Anyone that is visiting your [tour](#tour) pages and may convert to a [member](#member). This traffic includes visitors that came to your [site](#site) through an [affiliate](#affiliate) tracking link or are visiting organically.

### Template

The individual parts that constitute a complete [skin](#skin).

### Third Party

A [site](#site) that bills your [members](#member) and provides them with content on your behalf.

### Tour

Sample content available on a [site](#site). Tours can be associated with a particular [program](#program) and may feature a [popup chain](#popup-chain).

### Transaction Amount

The amount charged to a [member](#member) during a single [billing period](#period).

### Transaction Fee

The fee kept by the [biller](#biller) when they charge a [member](#member). [NATS](#nats) can record this fee and deduct all or part of it from [affiliate](#affiliate) [payouts](#payout).

### Trial Sign-up

A [member](#member) who signs-up to a trial account.

### Unique Hit

When a completely new [surfer](#surfer) clicks on your [link codes](#linkcode).

### Upgrade (Billing)

A [rebill](#rebill) that turns a [trial-member](#trial-sign-up) into a full [member](#member). (An upgrade may also be called a [conversion](#conversion).)

### Upsell

When an active member is offered a membership to another site from their member's area. Compare with [Cross Sell](#cross-sell).

### Visitor

Anyone that is visiting your [tour](#tour) pages and may convert to a [member](#member). This traffic includes visitors that came to your [site](#site) through an [affiliate](#affiliate) tracking link or are visiting organically.

### Webmaster
